Use Gemstone Identification and dodge counterfeit gemstones

Use Gemstone Identification and avoid counterfeit gemstonesGemstone Identification is a form of art which is based on scientific techniques. There is a wide variety of different stones in the world and it is important to have a proper knowledge about these stones. When someone buys a stone he or she should be aware of the various counterfeits or fake stones that are being sold along with the genuine ones.

Identification of gemstones becomes very crucial at the time of purchase. When you are buying a certain stone you must be aware whether the stone is genuinely the one you were looking for. Identification of stones will prevent you from being confused as you will be able to tell real stones from the fakes. Identification is difficult because of the similar molecular structures and characteristics. There are various steps involved in identifying authenticity of a gemstone.

Firstly for Gemstone identification you must check if it is a gemstone or just a metallic ore. If the surface is rough and sandy then it isn’t a gemstone. Check if the stone is malleable, if it is malleable then it is a mineral ore. Always keep in mind that pearls and fossilized wood are not considered gemstones.

The second test is for hardness. Hardness of a stone is considered quite crucial. There is variety of hardness scales out of which Moh’s scale is the most common for gemstones. This scale has ranks for every gemstone on a scale of one to ten. A hardness kit is required to measure the exact hardness. By performing several hardness tests on the stone one will be able to determine the hardness.

Thirdly, check the cleavage of the stone. It is the tendency of crystals to break along its structure fixed planes. Fourth is the crystal morphology. Most gemstones are made up of crystals and each of them is uniquely shaped as per their molecular structure. Streak is another important aspect for identifying a gemstone. During gemstone identification process many gemstones leave a streak on a hard, ceramic plate. Appearance of the streak and comparison with various charts will help.

Another factor you can make use is the color of the stone but it isn’t as reliable as other identification processes. There are other chemical and physical tests that can be done to verify if the stone is genuine but all of these are done by experts and also involves special testing equipment. One can test for the specific gravity of the stone. Test for the refractive index and also the manner in which the light is dispersed by the stone and the change in color pattern.
