Sunstone, a gemstone with a fiery look of the Sun

Sunstone is a beautiful gemstone and it is also called Heliolite. The gemstone gets its name from the name Heliolite. It has been derived from the Greek word “Helios” meaning sun and “lithos” meaning stone, hence the name.

The stone has a metallic appearance and is available in red, green and orange colors. Clean red colored gemstone is very rare in occurrence which commands a true gemstone prices. It has the ability to create reflections of light due to the presence of hematite and goethite.

The stone is formed from molten lava and discharged by volcano to the surface. The lava is then weathered away and fine crystals are formed. The stone has a hardness of 6.5-7.2 on Mohs scale with a density of 2.62-2.65.

The stone is found at many places namely India, Canada, USA, Russia, Madagascar, Norway and Finland. The stone is another type of feldspar. The opalescent golden yellow and orange makes it looks beautiful. There is also a common kind of softer orange with red and golden sheen.
