Amazing Seraphinite and the Jewellery that uses this stone.

Untitled Document

Seraphinite (or Serefina) is usually a deep forest green colour with feathery silver-colored inclusions of Mica, but it is also found in yellow, red, brown, tan or white.

It is also also known by the name Clinochlore, is a common member of the Chlorite Group of minerals. Clinochlore derives its name from the Greek "klino" meaning "oblique" or "inclined" and "chloros" meaning "green" as it is commonly colored deep forest green to green-black with inclusions of silvery Mica.

The beginning of the word 'seraph' according to the oxford dictionary means 'an angelic being, regarded in traditional Christian angelology as belonging to the highest order of the ninefold celestial hierarchy, associated with light, ardour, and purity.' The reason why the this name was chosen is due to the feathery wing patterns made by the silvery Mica contained within the stone. The Mica inclusions give a slight chatoyancy effect, giving it a wavery sheen, simular to Charoite (which is apparently mined in the same area).

Seraphinite forms through the metamorphic and hydrothermal alterations of other iron and magnesium silicate minerals. It crystalizes in the form of foliated (consisting of thin sheets or laminae) or granular masses and also as tabular crystals. It is mainly found near the Bratsk and Lake Baikal region of eastern Siberia, Russia (which is very close to where Charoite is also mined). Russian mineralogist Nikolay Koksharov (1818-1892 or 1893) is credited with its discovery.

  • A Chromium-rich variety is called Kaemmererite and has a beautiful bright lavender to crimson color.
  • The mineral Chamosite is an Iron-rich variety.

Specific gravity : 2.6 - 3.0

Category : Silicate mineral

Luster : Vitreous to pearly

Here is a nice video showing large sliced specimens of this stone.

It has hardness between 2 - 3 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness - meaning that it is a fairly soft stone compared to other stones and requires a bezzle setting (silver going all ther way around it) in case it is dropped on the ground, and because of its softness one needs to be very careful when wearing this stone in a bracelet.
