Septarian Nodule, Mother Nature’s extraordinary gift

Septarian Nodule has series of radiating cracks which has a turtle like appearance. These rare stones are formed at the bottom of the sea some 50 to 70 million years ago. The sediments are formed into balls because of the plants and animals decomposition. These are very rare to find on earth.

This is because of the volcanic eruptions which attracted the sediments and form mud balls. When the ocean receded the balls due to heat and other atmospheric conditions dried up and cracked.

The name is derived from the word “septem” which means seven. It was called so because the mud balls crack at 7 different points which is the sole reason behind the distinctive pattern the nodules display.
