Pyrite, a gemstone lover’s favorite piece

Pyrite is a beautiful looking stone, better known as “Fool’s Gold”. The name is derived from the Greek word "pyr" meaning "fire," and was called so because it was found that sparks would fly from it if struck against another mineral.

The stone has a shiny brassy yellow look and is therefore often mistaken as gold. It is one of the favorites among rock collectors mostly because of its stunning resemblance to gold. The stone has a beautiful luster and is found in vast number of forms and varieties.

The crystal is opaque in nature and its cleavage is very distinct. It has a hardness of 6-6.5 along with a specific gravity of nearly about 5.1. It is one of the most common forms of sulfide minerals.

The gemstone forms a cube with fine ridges on the face of the crystal. It has an octahedrons shape with nodules and massive forms. It is also occur as coarse granules.

The stone is being used in various popular jewellery designs. It is hard and less dense than Gold.
