The Basics: What you need to know (Mineral, Mineraloid and Rocks)

The difference between a Mineral, Mineraloid and a Stone/Rock.

A mineral is defined as being a natural occurring geological solid substance that has a defined chemical atomic structure, chemical composition and has specific physical properties. It must also have a crystalline structure.

Some examples of a mineral: Quartz Hematite Fluorite

A mineraloid is similar to a mineral but does not have a crystalline structure, may not have a very defined chemical structure and may not be solid.

Some examples of a mineraloid: Amber Obsidian Opal

A rock or stone however is different. A stone is a natural combination that can consist of one or several different types of minerals and mineraloids. They can be classified into three categories; igneous (from Magma/Lava), sedimentary (deposition of different materials over time) and metamorphic (rock altered due to heat/pressure).

Some examples of a stone: Ruby Zoisite Bloodstone Moss Agate
