Lapis Lazuli Jewellery - The Amazing Blue Stone...

Lapis Lazuli Jewellery can be found all over the world - but it is a rare stone (just have a look at this video to see how rare). The stone comes from in Chile, the Soviet Union, the United States, but mostly from the mountains of Afghanistan. Lapis Lazuli is an intense blue, lightly dusted with small flecks of golden Pyrite. The pattern left by the Pyrite and then shaped by the stone cutter helps to bring the stone to life. I have found i nour shop that about half prefer it with the pyrite and half prefer it with-out the pyrite.

Lapis is considered a rock, not a mineral. It combines various minerals, mostly lazurite, but also contains calcite (white), sodalite (blue) and pyrite (fools' gold, a metallic yellow). For it to be considered a mineral it would have to have only one component.

The Name Lapis Lazuli when broken down means "stone of Lâzhward".
Which refers to the place where it was mined.

In ancient times, lapis lazuli was known as sapphire (these days sapphire is associated with corundum).

In Egypt the stone was ground to a fine powder and used as eye shadow. Lapis Lazuli jewellery has been used for over 6000 years, very few stones can claim such long usage - it really is gemstone that one can refer to as special!
