Labradorite the amazing stone, creating wonderful jewellery.

Untitled Document

Labradorite is a Plagioclase Feldspar (has two cleavage angles) and is found in magmatic igneous and metamorphic rock. Feldspar is very abundant in the Earth's crust.

The shiller effect is caused by thin parallel layers (called lamellae) within the stone. These lamellae result from the separation and layering that takes place when chemistries change as high temperatures cool. The layers formed then reflect the light that enters the stone but will first scatter the light through the various layers until it emerges from the stone at a different wavelength (i.e. colour) than what it originally entered (diffraction). If you have not seen what the shiller effect looks link please click here to watch a video

Here is a wonderful website that uses this stone for carvings.

Here is a picture from the National Museum of Natural History what beauty!

The stone was originally discovered in on St. Paul Island, Labrador, Canada in 1770.

Pieces of the stone were found amongst the artifacts of the Red Painted People of Maine. The name comes from the province of Labrador in Canada, which is a famous locality for labradorite with an iridescent play of color.

Top quality variety of the stone is called Spectrolite which is comes from Finland

and Madagasca. The difference of Spectrolite is the intensity of the colour and also the colour goes from red to blue or vice versa. Here is an excellent site that shows what true Spectrolite looks like. It was discovered during WWII, and it is also called falcon's-eye.

I have read that the stone is also called black moonstone - but I personally have never hear this. I have also heard Rainbow Moonstone called Labradorite

The stone is usually a dark coloured stone that has a vibrant shiller effect (shiller is the name that refers to the flashing 'blue' that appears on the stone when seen at a certain angle). Different colours of shiller may be present - from blue, green, white and gold.

Other General information...

According to an Eskimo legend, the Northern Lights were once imprisoned in the rocks along the coast of Labrador.
