Hypersthene, gemstone with extreme strength
Hypersthene is a beautiful splintery stone occurring in black, brown or green color. The name has been derived from Greek words “hyper” meaning extreme and “sthenos” meaning strength. The stone has a pearly luster and has a popular pleochroism phenomenon. The stone is available as translucent and in opaque as well with medium hardness. The stone is a rare form of Enstatite. It is found in England, Canada, Greenland, Norway, USA, Czech Republic and Sweden. Adirondack Mountains of New York is considered to be the most important deposit of the world. It is a common mineral and is found in igneous and metamorphic rocks. The stone is brittle in nature and produces sparks of fire when struck against iron. The stone which is of ornamental variety has a sub-metallic luster. These stones are basically weathered specimens and have cleavage in two directions at nearly 90 degrees. The hardness of the stone is around 5-6 and has a specific gravity of 3.4-3.9. The stone is a favored one because of the bronze like looks and is very popular too.
