Wonderful Information about Goldstone and the jewellery that uses this stone.

Goldstone is a type of glittering glass made in a low-oxygen atmosphere - this prevents bubbles forming in the glass. The finished product can take a smooth polish and be carved into beads, figurines and jewellery. It is sometimes mistaken for or misrepresented as a natural material.

There is a natural stone that looks very simular to it and the name of it is call Sunstone - which is a type of high of quality Adventurine which is an Orange colour. I have sometimes had people try and sell me goldstone and call it Sunstone (this can also be seen when you type both stones into Google images and you will see quite a bit of the two stones mixed up).

The original manufacturing process was invented in seventeenth-century Venice by the Miotti family, which was granted an exclusive license by the Doge. Persistent folklore describes the stone as an accidental discovery by an unnamed Italian monastic order or medieval alchemists, but there is no pre-Miotti documentation to confirm this (apparently it is also sometimes called Monkstone). Another common name for the material is Aventurine glass.

The most common form is reddish-brown-orange colour, but there is also a blue version and even a green.

The stone contains tiny flecks of metallic copper that require special conditions to form properly. The initial batch is melted together from silica, copper oxide, and other metal oxides to chemically reduce the copper ions to elemental copper. The vat is then sealed off from the air and maintained within a narrow temperature range, keeping the glass hot enough to remain liquid while allowing copper to precipitate from solution without melting or oxidizing. After a suitable crystallization period, the entire batch is cooled to a single solid mass, which is then broken out of the vat for selection and shaping. The final appearance of each batch is highly variable and heterogeneous. The best material is near the centre or "heart" of the mass, ideally with large, bright metal crystals suspended in a semitransparent glass matrix.

They have perfected this process as I cannot remember ever seeing a poor quality goldstone that has bubbles or hardly and sparkles.
