Information about Fluorite and Jewellery

The name Fluorite comes from Latin "fluere" meaning flow. This name derives from the mineral usefulness in metallurgy to lower the melting point and promote the fusion of metals and minerals in slag.

See what a mine in Namibia looks like (with this video)

It ranges in colour from; purple, blue, green, yellow, colourless, brown, pink, black to reddish orange. It often has bands of colour that run parallel (sometimes called rainbow Fluorite). It is usually transparent to translucent. It comes in a large variety of possible colours, it is most known for the deep rich purple and green colour.

It occurs as a vein deposit, especially with metallic minerals (those containing lead and zinc minerals), where it often forms a part of the gangue (the surrounding "host-rock" in which valuable minerals occur). It is also found in some greisens, granites, pegmatites and high-temperature veins, and as a component of some marbles and other metamorphic rocks.

It is a widely occurring mineral which is found in large deposits in many areas all over the world. The world reserves of are estimated at 230 million tonnes with the largest deposits being in South Africa, Mexico and China. China is leading the world production.

Interesting facts:

  • Formerly called fluorspar
  • It is known as "The Most Colourful Mineral in the World".
  • It can be fluorescent under ultraviolet light (UV) and, like its normal light colours; its fluorescent colours are extremely variable. Typically it fluoresces blue but other fluorescent colours include yellow, green, red, white and purple. We purchased some fluorescent fluorite it was green under lights and then turned a wonderful blue when taken outside.
  • Sometimes (very rarely) possesses thermo luminescence abilities (to glow when heated). Once this has happened, it will never glow again.
  • Apart from Quartz, it is the most common sought after mineral for mineral collectors.
