What is Bloodstone

Bloodstone is a dark green variety of chalcedony coloured by traces of iron. Both polished and unpolished stones show red spots on the dark green background, resembling drops of blood, hence the name bloodstone.

The ancient source of bloodstone was the Kathiawar Peninsula of India. It is also found in Australia and Brazil. During the middle ages in Europe it was used for sculptures representing flagellation and martyrdom. The legend of the origin of bloodstone says that it was first formed when drops of Christ's blood fell and stained some jasper at the foot of the cross.
