Black Onyx, a stone with ultimate power

Black Onyx is beautiful looking gemstone. The name is derived from the Greek word, onyx meaning fingernail. The gemstone reveals its dark and deep opaque qualities. It is considered to be the first grounding stone and it is believed to be very popular among ancient Greeks and Romans.

The story that is associated with the gemstone is that Cupid cut the divine fingernails of Venus using an arrowhead while she was asleep. The clippings were left scattered on the sand and was turned into stone which symbolized that no heavenly body can ever perish.

The gemstone is pure chalcedony and almost all colors of chalcedony were called onyx. It is a dark stone and is commonly used in jewellery and crystal balls.

It is a form of fine textured quartz and is considered to be the most famous variety of this stone. It is used for stone carvings, beads, gems and jewellery.
