What is Aquamarine

Aquamarine is a pale blue to dark blue colour. In General the darker the colour the more highly valued it is, but a better rule of thumb is a balance between cleanliness (transparency) and the vividness of the colour i.e. if you look at a natural gemstone and see that there is very few impurities and the colour is really strong (but not to dark) and attractive then you will have a good idea that the gem will be at the upper end of value scale.

It is a type of Beryl which is a clear stone, when it has impurities it changes colour. If the gem was and not blue then it is know as an Emerald.

Blue is more common than Green hence emeralds are more valuable and emeralds do not grow as large.

Some stones have been treated to enhance their colour. If heated too much, it becomes colorless.

According to legend it has it's origin in the treasure chest of the mermaids,and has for centuries been considered a lucky stone for sailors.
