What is Amethyst
Amethyst is a Variety of Quartz with purple/violet colouration. The colour is mainly due to traces of iron.
The name comes from the Greek word ‘Amethusos’ which means ‘not drunk’ as it was believed to help prevent drunkenness. There is an ancient myth about Bacchus turning a young maiden to stone, and in remorse, he poured wine on the statue, staining it purple, and creating amethyst. Goblets of amethyst were said to prevent the drinker from being overwhelmed by the spirit.
In the old testament, it is written that Aaron, the Jewish high priest, wore this stone in his breastplate. The Catholic Bishop wears an amethyst on the second finger of his right hand.
It occurs in Alluvial (fine sand/soil consisting of mud deposited by flowing water) Deposits of Geodes and found in many countries however most commercial quality comes from Brazil.
It can form along with Citrine. If the two crystals are together it is called Ametrine. When it's heated some of the crystals change colour to yellow-brown. Many crystals sold as Citrine are in fact treated Amethyst.
Interesting fact…
The colour of Pyramidal crystals darkens towards the tips.
