Information About Amber

Amber is an organic gemstone, it was popular in ancient times because it was softer than most other minerals and easily worked.

It is fossilized resin that mainly comes from extinct coniferous trees and is sometimes given mineral-like names due to where it's found.

Amber can range in colour from transparent to translucent. Sometimes small insects and other organic material can be seen in the stone - they were trapped in the resin and were preserved as it hardened.

Did you know?... - Dehydration can cause cracks to form. - It may be sun spangled (small golden flakes inside). This may have been caused by trapped and flattened drops of water, or by heat treatment. - It can float in salt water and can be distinguished from plastic and glass by looking for inclusions. - A test for amber is to heat up a pin and poke the back of the gem. See if you can smell tree resin!
